Thu, 01/04/2021 The legal minimum wage for workers aged 23 and over went up to £8.91 per hour from 1 April 2021. This represents a 2.2% increase.However the Government has decided that the increase does not apply to people who are on furlough.The minimum hourly rate for people aged 21 and 22 increased to £8.36, for those aged 18–20 it became £6.56 and for the under-18s the rate went up to £4.62. The apprentice rate rose by 15p to £4.30.

All 61 Thorntons shops to close

Tue, 16/03/2021 Thorntons is the latest name to disappear from UK high streets. The chocolate maker has announced that it is to close all 61 of its shops, with the loss of up to 600 jobs. Thorntons chocolates will continue to be made at its factory in Alfreton in Derbyshire and the brand will remain available through other retailers and online. The first Thorntons chocolate shop opened in Sheffield in 1911. In 2015 the company was bought by the Italian confectioner Ferrero.

Supreme Court rules against Uber

Wed, 24/02/2021 The Supreme Court has ruled that Uber’s drivers are entitled to the legal employment rights of workers, such as the minimum wage, holiday pay and to join a workplace pension scheme.
